In February 1989, the MX-5 Miata made it’s debut at the Chicago Auto Show. On April 22nd, the MILLIONTH MX-5 rolled off the assembly line. It was a Japanese spec soft top 1.5. Hard to believe the car has been continuously in production for 27 years! That alone is a pretty big achievement. But, at the NY Auto Show, the MX-5 became the first and only car, ever, to win both “World Car of the Year” and “World Design of the Year”. Add to that “ND” version honors from just about every auto rag like this one, and you’ve got a reason to throw a party.
To celebrate, the hallowed MX-5 will turn “rockstar” and tour the world, stopping at fan events along the way. Look for it to criss-cross the U.S in September, culminating with the annual “Miatas at Mazda Raceway” event October 1st and 2nd. Mazda is also interested in partying with Mazda clubs along the way. On a side note, Auto Mentality has been blessed with a long term 2016 MX-5 in our auto stable. Next week, we begin our version of the celebration with the video series: “Miata vs. The World” . There will be some interesting matchups! See you on our video channel!
