The BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe…The best gas powered sport sedan. Period. I say gas powered, because Tesla has an incredible product as well (can we say “insane button”)? If you don’t need the engine growl, but still want to tear it up, get a 640 and save a couple grand.
There are many things to like – grip like a mountain goat while hauling through corners, the ability to approach 100 while feeling like 45, and the sweet digital display that completely changes with the driving mode you select. All wheel drive piece of mind and rather good fuel economy add to the plus column.
I’ve always liked the Porsche Panamera, but the BMW ups the ante in feel, noise, and seat comfort. It feels more planted than an Audi A7/A6 or Mercedes CLS550. The BMW 650GC also made the last year’s 7 series feel like…well…a couch (the new 7 changes that – and pending Congressional action, it’ll park itself in your garage at the push of a button – we’ll review the new 7 Soon).
So, when considering a sport sedan, why would you buy anything other than a BMW 640/650GC? Unfortunately, if you have a family, the back seat. Tight for ten year olds and toddler car seats. Tight for most humans actually. Also, if you have a long commute (45+ minutes), the low front seating position can make resting your left foot in certain places feel a bit uncomfortable after a while – the Tesla also had a similar issue for me. That’s pretty much it. Really, just two “cons” compared to the tremendous upside.
The BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe. Drive one. Or drive the 640. You’ll like ’em both. (more pictures below)
